I. Hideout for Bad Habits. Preface
“Many churches think they are hiding…” like you saw on the cover, hiding behind the American respect of the Bible teachings on church as “a house of prayer”; however Jesus reminded the religious people of His time that while a temple or church was meant by God to be a “house of prayer” and worship, among other thing as actual described in the Bible about the New Testament meaning of church, it had been turned into God’s own people as a “Den of Thieves”. Many churches think they are hiding, not from a single sin of the past but from weekly bad habits, in the church and out. They hide within the walls of the church where God can not see, they think, because He is inside, they think. What they are really hiding behind is the respect Americans have for religion and churches. History has changed the world we live in: with the advent of the last great apostasy, the Falling Away, the world in our churches and outside is no longer the same; and therefore the perceptions of the present, much different from earlier times, have to be adjusted to accommodate what God’s people in churches today are truly like. One of the major problems is that the follies or bad habits of church members, as listed on the cover from II Timothy 3:1-5, are no longer considered as sin. Things like “lack of self-control”, pride, and boasting are most generally considered as natural expressions of an aggressive (perhaps type A) and friendly personality; and those characteristics of character and personality deemed so important for success in the world are within the church expressions of a lack of self-discipline and self control. Also what church members today are hiding from is the reality of the difference of a single sin or a few sins committed in the past and bad habits that are repeated each week, in the church and outside. Quite often the self-righteous robe is put on which says that God will overlook while in the church a few sins of the past without the admission that those sins are really habitual, repeated week after week without repentance. After all, they are really “follies” or “bad habits”, not sins!

Daniel, the Predictive Historian of the Falling Away. 




While Isaiah, of course, gives us the most predictive history on the children of Israel as God’s people, Daniel gives us the most predictive history for the Fullness of the Gentiles people, that is us in our nation and in our time! Beyond the interpretation of dreams for the King of Babylon, Daniel’s visions and visits from both Gabriel and the Son of Man came in answer to his fervent prayers, first to confess the sins of His people for the past and present, and then to ask, “What is going to happen to my people.” Sometimes the answers made Daniel faint immediately and sick later.

12-1:  Eschatology of Last Things.

“Last Things” or end time events have become known in the Biblical world as “eschatology”. And some of the weirdest and most unsound Bible teachings in the world have come out of eschatology, not to be confused with the real eschatology of the Bible itself. Since part of the problem of these interpreters of last things who ignore the ASPI method of Bible study and teaching is that they most general start and end with the book of Revelation, taking it completely out of the context of the other teachings of Christ and of the Bible as if the book of Revelation was not part of the authorized Semi-Public Word of God, in reality and in interpretation. Many have taken advantage of the neglect by most believers of last things and the book of Revelation, to spin their horrifying tales with scary and awesome symbols and charts. You can generally tell the real ASPI interpreters from the charlatans when they drag out charts to show you elaborate timeliness and kingdom phases, like as originated with Darby and Scofield, and like Tim LeHaye has done with his other books not considered to be fiction. In short, in order to keep such errors of interpretation caused by such private interpretations, independent of Jesus and the Prophets, we will consider last things from Daniel, Jesus in Mark 13 and Matthew 24, and from the book of Revelation, showing the similarity in the method of sweeps and in the parable like nature of the teachings. If we succeed, and you buy it, we will have come one giant step forward in throwing off of the yoke of the fundamentalists which they have intimidated and forced on the Southern Baptist Convention. If the foundation for Bible conservatism and salvation is their pre-millennium beliefs where they have intimidated, and we throw off that yoke, at the same time we can start a revival that can likewise destroy their hold on control and on a spirit of warfare that has crept over the Convention like a dark cloud. {I say that surely this is the most destructive of all bad influences on the kingdom today that has helped to bring on the Falling Away; and surely if Osama Bin Laden or the Pope were not such logical candidates for the man of sin, we might have to choose a fundamentalist to fit that role.}

12-2:  The Six Sweeps of Daniel

While I target for “last things”, sometimes called “end times” or eschatology, is Mark 13 with additional understanding from Matthew 24 and Luke, the legitimate place to start with this awesome subject of last things is in the book of Daniel, after we have gained some perspective from the Apostle Peter’s great sermon on the day of Pentecost, as he explained exactly what was happening with Coming of the Holy Spirit to earth in a special way. Peter and the Prophet Joel explain each other, typing the events of that day together with the “last days” as Peter quotes from Joel 2:28-32 on the famous subject of the Day of the LORD from the Old Testament. Far better than running off with charts and weird drawings, and interpretations as weird is it to start with something as bASPIc and easy to understand as Peter’s message with his New Testament interpretation of “last days” and the Day of the LORD mentioned so often in the Old Testament, and always with references to the cessation of light from the sun, the moon, and the stars. {That in New Testament times and today gains attention since the world is quite accustomed to the routine of sunrise, sunset, the stars at night and the moon.} There were two sayings common among the Hebrews, “tomorrow in Jerusalem” to encourage themselves with better days; and “the Day of the LORD” to denote ultimate justice. And this is also a good principle of the ASPI and Bible understanding. Since the Bible is semi-publicly interpreted, in other words of “no private interpretation”, and since what the Apostles say about the Old Testament quotes interprets the Old Testament Prophets, and vice versa, we should start with what is most easily understood in the New Testament and from the Apostles of Jesus Himself in order to understand “last things”. Goodness knows, the struggle for Peter to understand was hard; but he had the help of Jesus, the Master Teacher, and don’t forget that Jesus after His resurrection was with them 40 days explaining the things of the kingdom before He Ascended on to heaven. Likewise, we must remember that Peter now had the help of the Holy Spirit to understand and explain. We might add that as we get all this information on “last things” from Acts 2, as Peter quotes from Joel 2:28-32, we are also getting info from Dr. Luke who wrote Acts, and I maintain also from the Apostle Paul who left for him manuscripts for research.

12-3:  The Period of “Last Days”, Pentecost to the Second Coming.

If you would ask most Bible believers today, “are we living in the last days?”, they would say “yes”; and if you had asked the Bible readers of the first few centuries if they were living in the last days, they would say “yes”; and both are correct. The last days often confused with the final period of history, say about the last 40 years of history during what is called the Falling Away, is often confused with such periods of history as “the latter times” and the Falling Away. Pure, simple, and scripture is the period of history from the first day of Pentecost after the Ascension, marked according to Peter and Joel with the Coming of the Spirit to take Jesus’ place and reside and work on earth to the Second Coming. You may want to read Acts 2:14-21 right now. You will see that the major part of it is Joel 2:28-32; and you will note how the Apostle Peter in an effort to explain that the other disciples were not drunk as it seemed and since it was so early in the day, explained that what was happening there in Jerusalem at that very moment was that which was predicted by the Prophet Joel. “But this is what was spoken by the Prophet Joel….’ (Acts 2:16) Okay, we need to nail down quickly certain obvious Biblical facts in order to proceed from the Bible with the wide sweep of eschatology.

First, on this first day of Pentecost after the Ascension was the beginning of the “last days”. In the Bible, you have “latter times”, end times, and last days; but you can clearly see from the context of Acts, Peter, and Joel that the last days started with the Coming of the Holy Spirit in great power to take the place of Jesus on earth. Second, and by the way the end of the last days with the Day of the LORD is also given in Joel and from Peter as “the great and awesome {or notable} day of the LORD”. The sweep of what happens in-between the beginning and the end of the last days in the order of Joel is: (1) the power and help of the Holy Spirit becomes more democratic and common during the last days, not like the specialized empowerment of the Old Testament, as say during the period of the Judges; (2) the last days will be a continuous period of signs in the heaven above and the earth beneath, those signs summarized as “blood, fire, and vapor of smoke”—and certainly every year we see those; but (3) just before the Day of the LORD the sun will be turned into darkness and the moon into blood—obviously the shaking of the heavens and the earth that Paul wrote often of, and the earth melting with fervent heat of which Peter writes; and that leaves for the Day of the LORD itself the Second Coming of Christ and the Judgment Court of which we previously read so much in Daniel; and of course another characteristic of the continuity of the last days is the growth of the kingdom of God as “whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD shall be saved”. This would correlate with the Gospel being preached in every nation from Jesus in Mark 13 and Matthew 24. Also, the Fullness of the Gentiles of Paul in Romans. {We would naturally think that while the final days of this old earth are marred by the Falling Away, that with more and more of the signs in the earth beneath and the heavens above, the extent to which humans, hopefully also Jews, call upon the name of the LORD will increase; and we are inclined to think that this unique combination of Falling Away from the tares and the stumbling will be mixed with new and surprising callings on the LORD which Daniel is told is the time of refinement and making white, alias a final tribulation as contrasted to the Great Tribulation which took place obviously during the first few centuries as the most awesome persecution which if not shortened by God would have even deceived the elect.}

12-4:  The First Sweep of Predictive History in Daniel.

With this simple Bible perspective, we will jump into the first four cycles of Daniel, then add to that the fifth cycle which we did not complete in chapter 1. The first sweep is given in the first vision that Daniel himself had and of the four beasts, and the peak and valley events are: (1) God, the Ancient of Days, sitting in Judgment with His court and the power to execute; (2) The Man of Sin, or the Son of Perdition, respectively of the Greek and Roman Empire, like a parable, completely fulfilled in the end time Man of Sin of Paul in II Thessalonians; (3) Other kingdoms under the control and judgement of God and kings given a period of dominion according to the determination of the Ancient of Days; (4) Establishment {not fulfillment} of the Everlasting kingdom of Christ to rule over all other kings and kingdoms, determined by the Ancient of Days but not truly established on earth until the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; and (5) The Second Coming of Christ to finalize the reign of Christ over all other kingdoms of this earth, and then deliverance to the Great Judge that God may be all in all. Thus, in the simplicity of Peter, Acts, and Joel we have with a first broad sweep of Daniel some of the main events of all time and eschatology. We can start our table of peaks and valleys. {The complete Table of the sweeps of Daniel is listed in the Appendix, each sweep is identified by a color coded and at the top of the column.}

12-5:  The Second Sweep of Predictive History in Daniel.

With the second sweep of Daniel, of course, our radar sweep of the future must continue to peak up some of the previous peaks and valleys; but since we come closer, we will pick up more peaks and valleys, or at least see some of those previous peaks and valleys clearer. The second sweep is the interpretation of the first vision of Daniel about the four beasts, and we find it we looked at in chapter 1 of this book in Daniel 7:15-27. (1) Daniel has explained to him that these four beasts, like explanations from Jesus in parables, are four kings, giving some more details—therefore we really do not need to add a peak or valley event here; (2) the focus of Daniel’s interest is on the details about the little horn, the man of son or perdition so important throughout history and throughout Daniel’s sweeps, mainly on how he speaks very pompous words against the Ancient of Days; (3) the pompous little horn, the man of sin, in his fight against the saints is prevailing {the Falling Away, of course}; (4) the Ancient of Days judges in favor of the saints and the Lord Jesus Christ executes Judgment at His Second Coming; (5) the son of perdition will be a revolutionary that tries to change “times and laws”, and the saints will be given into his hands for a “time, times, and half a time”; (6) The Court of God takes away the dominion of the man of sin and Satan, destroying it forever; and (7) the greatness of the kingdoms of the earth will be over to the Kingdom of the Most High God where the saints will obey and serve Him. {And you should take a quick look at this Table of Last Things in the Appendix before we must move it to the Appendix of this book in order to add all of the five cycles of Daniel, Mark 13 and Matthew 24, and the corresponding sweeps of the book of Revelation.}

12-6:  The Third Cycle of Predictive History of Daniel.

The third cycle of Daniel is based on the second personal vision of Daniel, Daniel 8:1-28, the vision of the Ram and the Goat and with the interpretation from Gabriel himself, sent from heaven by the command of God as the beginning of Daniel’s prayer. While much of it is about the kings of Persian, Greece, and Rome—which you might if interested in history want to compare with secular history, all well-known facts, we do get additional insight into the little horn, the man of sin again, as the little horn spreads from the north to the south, east, and west; and as the forces on earth join with the fallen forces from heaven to wage war. {You are reminded of the war between Satan and the beast of Revelation which is against the Woman and Her seed, Mary being the woman and the seed being those who would be called saints.} And before we pass on to the fourth cycle, you should know that Gabriel was sent to make Daniel understand about “the time of the end”, to use the words of Gabriel himself.

12-7:  The Fourth Sweep of Predictive History of Daniel, 9:1-27.

The fourth sweep of Daniel 9:1-27, with the coming of Gabriel to give an answer to Daniel about what is to be the fate of his people, prayer on which started after Daniel read the Law, the historical books especially Judges, and the Prophets, and in particular as he focused on the 70 weeks of Jeremiah. (1) 70 weeks {or in reality 70 years} is the amount of time from Captivity to great desolation for Israel, God allows in order to let all the transgressions of Israel run their course, to make an end to their rebellion and unfaithfulness, to make reconciliation to God for their sins, to bring in the everlasting righteousness of Christ and the kingdom of God on earth, and to seal up all the Old Testament through the teachings of Jesus and the Apostles {the New Testament record, or the second half of the oracles of God}; (2) From the Restoration until the Messiah comes and will be cutoff will be 69 years; (3) behind that will be the physical realities of temple and Jerusalem destruction, in the abomination of desolation, of the spiritual reality of separation from God and Christ that happened the year after approximately 100,000 Jews were converted; (4) this anti-Christ, a prototype or parable of the ultimate man of sin of the very end times, will be the Roman general Titus, later Caesar, who destroys the temple and Jerusalem in 75 A.D.; (5) Satan and the man of sin, during the Falling Away and after the release of Satan by the withdrawal of the Holy Spirit, will prosper under the wings of desolation; and (6) the end of the desolation is in the consummation where the Jews again receive some spiritual blessings, perhaps more in eternity than here on this earth, although we must allow from Paul and Romans something to happen among the Jews after the Fullness of the Gentiles: The Fifth Cycle of Predictive History in Daniel, 10-12.

Fifth cycle of Daniel, in Daniel 10-12 with Daniel’s personal vision of the Glorious Man. Up to this point, Daniel has received primarily bad news in answer to his prayerful requests as to what will happen to his people. Now, we are hopeful like Daniel for more good news, although as in the nature of all sweeps in Daniel or elsewhere like in Revelation and Mark 13 and Matthew 24, there is much repetition. Here are the prime peaks and valleys, sometimes with just details of the previous peaks and valleys, of this last sweep. (1) while all know chapter 10 to be on Persia, and eleven to start on the famous kings of the north and the south, where the king of the north ultimately turns into the man of sin of the end times, we still must remember how Daniel was informed in an introduction to the interpretation that “the vision refers to many days yet to come” (Daniel 10:14); (2) it is the king of the north, first a Grecian king then a Roman king then the man of sin, that will take away the daily sacrifices and defile the temple in Daniel 11:31, the famous “abomination of desolation” of Daniel and referenced by Jesus in Matthew 24; (3) the people who know God shall be strong and carry out great exploits—obviously Acts and the Apostles including Paul contrasted with only a year from the Jews as “the people who do wickedly against the covenant” and who are flattered by Satan and the next-to-the-last man of sin, the Roman Emperors; (4) While the process continues throughout history and the world of those who understand instructing many (11:33), the great tribulation happens where “they shall fall by sword and flame, by captivity and plundering”; and then (5) we go all the way to the Falling Away of the final tribulation where “some of those of understanding shall fall, to refine them, purify them, and make them white, until the time of the end” (11:35) {perhaps you have never thought of the Falling Away period as a time when the kingdom of God, if not the churches, will be (a) refined, (b) purified, and (c) made white from this beginning to the end with the Second Coming, so that we might think of the simultaneous Falling Away and refinement, purification, and whitening as the Final Tribulation; (6) the king of the north, now almost completely turned the final anti-Christ, or man of sin, shows his colors with (a) do according to whatever he wants, (b) exalting himself above every god, (c) blasphemy against the God of gods (11:36), and (d) prospering right up to the time the cup of wrath is full, (e) ignoring the God of his fathers, (f) ignoring women, (g) put a god of war to whom he is devoted above all else, (h) war against the strongest fortresses with a foreign god, which has to be no less than Satan himself—and the man will come out in the open to acknowledge this worship and service of Satan, (i) and this king, the final man of sin will advance the “glory” of Satan, (j) he will make wickedness to reign over many and divide up the land for his own gain; (7) NOW WE ARE NEARER TO THE END for the words are “at the time of the end” (11:40), there is a battle between the king of the north and the king of the south who attacks him, but the king of the north will enter the countries and overwhelm them all the way to the Glorious Land of Palestine with a taking of the riches of the lands and countries; (8) News from the east and the north, and the Great battle happens as “he shall go out with great fury to destroy and annihilate many” (11:44); (9) as he also plants the “tents of his palace” between the seas the glorious holy mountain, sound like on the Gaza strip doesn’t it; (10) “yet he shall come to his end, and no one will help him” (11:45); (11) there shall be a time of trouble such as never seen from the beginning to then; (12) this is the time of deliverance of the people of Daniel, everyone who is found written in the book of life; (13) the body resurrection of the all the dead with a separation into a group of (a) shame and a (b) group of “some to everlasting life” during the period of which some will shine like the firmament and like the stars forever.

12-9:  The Sixth Sweep of Predictive History in Daniel, Daniel 12:4-13.

Since we have obviously come to eternity with the Judgement separation of the shamed and the recipients of everlasting life, we will need a sixth cycle or sweep in order to finish Daniel 12:4-13, which is especially addressed to Daniel, but also applicable to us. (1) Shut up the book from now to the time of the end; and (2) from now to the time of the end, “many shall run to and fro” {an obvious increase in world travel}, “and knowledge shall increase” {obviously the information explosion}; (3) how long until the fulfillment of all these wonders Daniel asks, and receive the answer of a “time, times, and half a time” so here specifically the time, times, and half a time is applied to history from the time of Daniel to the very end—time would be from Daniel until the Jews are cut off from salvation, times would be the time of the last days, the preaching of the Gospel to every nation, and the Fullness of the Gentiles, and the halftime would be that short period of the Falling Away, the realization of the Man of Sin, and the Release of Satan with the withdrawal of the Holy Spirit from earth, corresponding also to the Final Tribulation, and somewhere in there before the Second Coming of Christ comes with the final great battle lead against the man of sin and Satan; (4) all of the things mentioned will be completely fulfilled as in the Falling Away and withdrawal of the Holy Spirit, “the power of the holy people has been completely shattered”; (5) Again is the integration in this sixth cycle like in the fifth cycle of how “many shall be purified, made white, and refined, but the wicked shall do wickedly; and one of the wicked shall understand, but the wise shall understand.” (12:10).

12-10:  Signs for the Time, Times, and the Half Time.

If we are right in our interpretations of Daniel, and in the previous teachings of Jesus in Mark 13 as well as Matthew, then the time would relate to the generation of the four disciples who on Mount Olive asked the questions about things to come, the times would refer to the generations after them of the history of the kingdom of Christ until 2006, and the half time would refer to the 45 last years of the earth, the time of the Falling Away. What we really desire to look at is the remaining parables and teachings of Mark 13 and of Matthew 24, 25, recalling that more of this event of last teachings form Jesus on the Mount of Olives is recorded in Matthew 24 and 25 than in Mark 13. It is the same time and event, but Mark in the name of action and brevity has shortened the teaching time and content; and I think as stated before, that Mark is more concerned about his generation and himself than he is concerned about end times. That is understandable. Of course, we are much closer now, even perhaps in the 45 last years of earth during the Falling Away; and we naturally are more concerned about Matthew and all the teachings, yet we will stick with Mark in order to make our efforts more a condensed version and with comments. {Anytime you wish you can read Mark, Matthew, even Luke and John; and a good harmony of the Gospels, like Robertson’s Harmony is recommended as an assist in the paralleling of events in the life of Christ.}

“…that it shall be for a time, times, and half a time; and when the power of the holy people has been completely shattered, all these things shall be finished.” (Daniel 12:7b)

  1. Time.

We have learned from Daniel that the “time”, the first major division of time in the three divisions, would be from Daniel’s own generation until the Jews, like the Messiah are cutoff from the kingdom. 69 years after Restoration until the Messiah is cut off, and 70 years until the people of Israel are cut off. Remember Daniel’s incessant questioning about “what will happen to my people?” and “when will it happen?”  It is the equivalent of the “How Long?” Of the book of Revelation. Before praying for his people Daniel was reading from the Prophet Jeremiah, and of how the city of Jerusalem would be “desolate” for 70 years (Daniel 9:2). {What specifically read was 70 years of “desolations” in Jerusalem. This is more than deserted, a city and nation and land left homeless as the Jews are in Exile, but it speaks of desolations of worship in the Temple once selected by God, of spiritual desolation of the people from God with their rebellion, disloyalty, and unrighteousness.} Whatever period we see in Jeremiah, and it indeed appears to be the time of Captivity, it is neither the 69 weeks or 70 weeks of Daniel. God changes the focus from the nation of Israel and Jerusalem to the Messiah where He has ordained it all along. We have a new 70, this time 70 weeks of 490 years in parable form as 70 weeks in Daniel 9:24-27 in the 70 weeks with the addition of a 62 weeks of 434 years as the “time” before the crucifixion of Jesus as the “Messiah shall be cut off” (9:26) for the world. This much is very clear, except for the little mathematical manipulation of numbers where 1 week is equal to 7 years, as Gabriel comes to give Daniel skill in understanding.

“Seventy weeks are determined for your people and for your holy city…Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the command to restore and build Jerusalem until Messiah the Prince, there shall be seven weeks and sixty-two weeks; the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublesome times…And after the sixty-two weeks Messiah shall be cut off, but not for Himself; and the people of the prince who is to come shall destroy the city and sanctuary. (Daniel 9:24-25)

490 years is all the time the nation of Israel has left with God and the kingdom of God. It starts with the Restoration {recorded in Ezra, Nehemiah, and some of the Prophets} and continues until the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus Christ {the of Daniel are “Messiah”, Hebrew equivalent of the Greek word Christ, and “Prince”, for the Son of God}. This is a parable method of saying to Israel that you have one week of 7 years after you cut off the Messiah to get your spiritual affairs in order, and from then on through the times and half-a-time, there will be few conversions among the children of Israel. God needed them back in Palestine in order that Christ might be born as predicted in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, and the light seen throughout all Israel. God needed Israel to also see the extent of their rebellion in that they cut off His very own Son. However, after they cut Him off, they had only one week of seven years {approximately 33 A.D. to approximately 40 A.D.} of conversions {approximately 100,000 with 3,000 alone on the first day of Pentecost after the Ascension}.  That these little manipulations of time and numbers, like the one week of 7 years of Laban and Jacob are justified is the historical evidence for (1) the decree for Restoration in 457 B.C.; and (2) the coming of the Messiah as announced by John the Baptist 483 years later {7 X 69} in approximately 26 A.D. {I am sure you are aware of the minor problems from Bishop Ussher’s dating method, whereby Jesus was actually born approximately 4 B.C.} During the 3 ½ years of Christ’s ministry, midway of the 7 years, Jesus Himself confirmed the covenant with many Jews. The finishing of the transgressions of Daniel, the same as the filling up of the measure of their—the point at which God said enough is enough, the original 490 years of the 70 weeks of Daniel above. Once again, if you take Restoration {several dates are possible when you look at the various decrees from Persian rulers that controlled the Jews}, as 457 B.C. then the end of any spiritual enlightenment of the Jews was approximately 33 A.D. The “abomination of desolation”, alias the ultimate abomination of these desolations, the desecration of the holy of Holies in God’s own temple at Jerusalem—the ultimate as a symbol of how the people of God had let their God down—is mentioned twice in Daniel {9:27, 11:31 and 12:11} and once in Mark 13:14. {Matthew 24:15 is the equivalent of Mark 13:14.} More specifically the complete phrase is used in 11:31 and 12:11 while the wording is somewhat different in 9:27.

“But he shall confirm a covenant with many for one week; but in the middle of the week He shall bring an end to sacrifice and offering. And on the wing of abominations shall be one who makes desolate. Even until the consummation which is determined is poured out on the desolate.” (Daniel 9:27)

On the wings of those abominations and desolations comes the Roman General Titus {called Daniel a prince since later Titus will become a Caesar of the Roman Empire, having destroyed the city and the temple of Jerusalem, allowed by coming on the wings of Israel’s desolations, desecrated the temple; and the daily sacrifices were terminated, approximately 75 A.D.} So centered around that great destruction of Jerusalem, Titus was mad after Jerusalem held out so long against his siege and the city and area was strewn with Roman crosses of the crucified, is the passage of Mark 13:14-23: (1) the abomination of desolation; (2) fleeing the housetops of Jerusalem and the cities of the area; (3) a period of great tribulation the record of which starts in Acts and goes on into Revelation, alias the rest of the first century, (4) and which continues for a couple of more centuries of “tribulation such as has not been seen since the beginning of time until this time, nor ever shall be, and unless the Lord had shortened those days, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect’s sake, whom He chose, He shortened the days” (Mark 13:19020}

  1. Times.

Actually, the Great Tribulation, as contrasted to the Final Tribulation of the halftime, belongs more to the “times” than to the time. Even as the preaching of the Gospel to every nation before the end of the age belongs to both the “time” and “times” so it likewise marks the end of the Age with the Second Coming and the Gathering. With the desolations of the Jew complete as the chosen people of God, evangelism turns to the Gentiles, and under the control of God goes toward the Fullness of the Gentiles. The gospel is preached to every nation, and the United States replaces the nation of Israel as the chosen people of God. The Great Tribulation runs into the Final Tribulation in Mark more than in Matthew, but the “times” would include both, the Final being more a tribulation of the disintegration of nature, and as much on the elect as on the non-elect; but with the addition of the Falling Away as it passes from the “times” to the halftime. The false prophets and teacher of Mark 13:21-22 starts even in the time, gets worse in the “times”, and becomes extremely bad to the extent of the vast heaping up of an army of itching ear teachers in the half time of the Falling Away.

  1. Half Time.

Things move fast in the predicted 45 years of the halftime: the period which Paul calls the Falling Away. The period where the Holy Spirit is withdrawn from earth, the final man of sin and son of perdition {beyond the king of the north of the Greek and Roman Empires} makes His appearance; and as the Holy Spirit is withdrawn, Satan is released from his symbolic imprisonment of 1000 years which started on the first day of Pentecost after the Ascension of Jesus. The man of sin, as king of the north, leads an army against the king of the south and defeats him. He makes his palace between the holy mountain of the Glorious Land and the seas; and after frightening news comes to him from the north and east, he is cut off with no one to help him. Although we have no real justification to look for the nation of Israel to again prosper physically and spiritually, apart from the consummation in heaven and of the new Jerusalem with the new earth lowered from heaven, we do have justification to look for a last giant battle be fought in the Glorious Land of the Middle East; and I think we can see how rapidly the sides between the Muslims on one side and the West of U.S. and Israel has built up in only 5 years, realizing how significantly it can change in the gigantic last battle in 40 more years.  And having cleared the board of fictitious interpretations, and having laid a foundation in the ASPI of the Bible, we are clear to speculate on the possibilities of only 40 more years for this earth since undoubtedly, we are already in the Falling Away of “they will not endure sound doctrine…”  {We are allowing for only 5 years of the 45 years already in the Falling Away, when in reality it would seem more like we have been in the Falling Away for 10 years, even 20 years when you consider the fuedamentalists takeover of the SBC as a significant step into the Falling Away.  And although you may consider some of this as pure speculation, surely you will at least treat it with the same respect that you treat the fictional studies of Tim LeHaye on the Second Coming and the End of the Age.}

12-11:  In the churches and Kingdom Evidences of the Falling Away

The key to understanding is whether you can see in the churches and in the kingdom of Christ of today evidences of the Falling Away among God’s people. I will not repeat all the arguments here of three of my previous books that include studies of the Falling Away: (1) SOME SOUNDS OF SOUND FAITH, (2) SOME MORE SOUNDS, and (4) volume 4 of the LEARN CHRIST commentaries, “Christ, Paul, and the Falling Away”, this last of which treats the book of Hebrews as the book of the Falling Away, of the First and of the Last in the Half-Time. It can be summarized in the words of Paul as “Beware brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God…” Never forget that all of the so-called children of God, the nation of Israel, that came out of Egyptian bondage, and over 20 years of age fell in the wilderness except for four; and furthermore, that the Scriptures tell us that were forbidden from eternity in the eternal rest of God. Pure and simple that is the First Falling Away; and Paul speaks in II Thessalonians of the necessity of the Second Falling Away before the Second Coming of Christ. Like I say, I will not try to repeat the evidences in society and churches and the kingdom today that the Falling Away is well under way, but rather I will make a more general approach from the local church behaviors of II Timothy, in particular to explain the difference between the bad characteristic of church behavior in the “perilous times”, chapter 3, and the absolute intolerance toward sound doctrine of the Falling Away, chapter 4.

However, for some perspective, a perspective that we obviously have not gained in today’s kingdom of Christ and God by the respect or toleration we have for the tares and goats, by a reminder about both parables. While we are looked at both, recall as Jesus interprets those parables, that Satan is actually planting traitors and deceivers inside the kingdom of God. Why do you think Satan would want to do that, and why would the tares, humans with freedom of choice, desire to get into the kingdom under the leadership of Satan? Well, I think we have the human motivations in the bad behavior of church members as recorded in II Timothy 3:1-9 where there a form of religion or “godliness” without the power of conversion; and where the motivations are factors like “love for self”, “love for money”, to be in a democratic and gracious crowd that will listen to their boasting and even accept their traitorous doctrines from Satan, even like Satan despising the truly good people and good deeds that come their way, loving their pleasure more than the god they claim to serve when in reality they show that they are serving more the god of this world, Satan; headstrong and haughty as a diversion from their commitment to sound doctrine; blasphemers and unholy in their denials of the power of godliness, they nonetheless with unthankful, unholy, and unforgiving attitudes cover up their blasphemies with the sheep’s clothing to look like any other kingdom or church member. While we are told to give such a tolerance of no physical separation from the kingdom until God takes care of it at the end of the halftime, we likewise are told not to associate with them if they be called brothers, telling us in several ways and on several occasions in the Bible that we are more free to associate with the tares in the kingdom and the tares in the church than we are with the tares in the rest of the world, the tares that have made no public commitment to the kingdom and church. “And from such people turn away!” (II Timothy 3:5b)

“I wrote to you in my epistle not to keep company with sexually immoral people. Yet I certainly did not mean with the sexually immoral people of this world, or with the covetous, or extortioners, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother {yes, church members}, who is sexually immoral {and don’t forget the earlier difference between habitual practices and brief stumbling’s}, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner—not even to eat with such a person.” (I Corinthians 5:9-11)

It may seem incongruous, at first, to think that we should have more toleration for the tares out there in the world than we do for the tares that are called brethren in the church, but that is the gist of the kind of TOLERATION OF THE TARES that the Word of God teaches. These tares are far more dangerous since they look like sheep and since they are hiding in among the wheat field of the kingdom. Our toleration, gone amuck to the extreme of the toleration of the American Democratic Faith, which is world and has a worldly goal, allows them to continue their dirty work of the Falling Away, and under the leadership of the great progenitor of the lie and of the Falling Away, Satan himself. Let us look again as a reminder of the parable of the goats and the sheep as explained by Jesus in Matthew 25:31-46, and part of an explanation of what happens after His Second Coming of Matthew 24,25 and Mark 13.

“When the Son of Man comes in His glory {this has to be the Second Coming, which is the subject under discussion by Jesus anyway, and since here Jesus comes in glory as contrasted to the humble way He came the first time}…and all the holy angels with Him {this shows it also to be the Second Coming since this time He does what He refused to do the first time, although the angels were available to Him, to bring them for assistance in the Separations of the sheep from the goats at the four corners of the earth, admittedly a very large job, and of the dead as well as the living to be identified by their names in heaven and their DNAs, no doubt; although I think that with the names, the angel of that believer also has a specific location where they know to go for the body, and since the soul is already in heaven, where the angels will also gather sheep, that person can help in the location—right, it will be no small job, but much simpler than the Creation of the old heavens and earth}…then He will sit on the throne of His glory {well, we know that the Returning Lord is seated on the throne of judgment and rule}…All the nations will be gathered before Him {yes, the angels have been active in gathering all the nations before the Lord Jesus Christ}…and He will separate them one from another {the Great Separation},…as a shepherd divide his sheep from the goats. And He will set the sheep on His right hand, but the goats on the left. Then the King will say to those on His right hand, ‘Come, you blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world”…{even as according to Ephesians we are chosen in Christ from before the foundation of the world, so our kingdom inheritance has also been prepared}…”for I was hungry and you gave Me food; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and you took Me in: I was naked and you clothed Me; I was sick and you visited Me; I was in prison and you came to Me.’” {do we really believe that such simple acts of kindness can take a person out of the goat category and put them in the sheep category; yes, when it is a habit of life and belief that shows itself in many gracious acts}…”Then the righteous will answer Him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry and feed You, or thirsty and gave You drink”? When did we see You a stranger and take You in, or naked and clothed You? Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and come to You?’ {Well, Jesus answers as he told about the little child of faith or the little big child of faith, the least of the members in the kingdom of God, how any time you have done these acts of graciousness to the least in the kingdom, you have for all practical purposes also done it because of faith in Christ, and you have passed from goat status in your life to sheep status!}…And the King will answer and say to them, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brethren {I think they will see Jesus nod toward the sheep on the right hand}…you did it to Me.”

The judgments of Jesus turn toward those on the left hand, after the angels have gathered them from the four corners of the earth also, the living and the dead, toward the goats on the left hand; and it is not good, but it is all over.

“Then He will also say to those on the left hand, ‘Depart from Me, you cursed, into the everlasting fire prepared for the devil and his angels…” {the company kept in life determines the company kept in eternity, if one is a servant of Satan—by definition any of the world not a servant of God—then that person will also share with the fate of Satan and his angels}…for I was hungry and you gave Me no food; I was thirsty and you gave Me no drink; I was a stranger and you did not take Me in, naked and you did not clothe Me, sick and in prison and you did not visit Me.’ {what we do for other sheep in the kingdom of God and of Christ shows our faith and the reality of our faith, you know like James said “faith without works is dead”; it is non-profitable, and does not save, and it shows a certain respect of persons among the sheep, that is also a bad sign}…Then they {the goats of course have a spokesman, and the last chance to boast or complain in the kingdom}… also will answer Him {the tares or goats always have an answer until this final chance to answer, then they lose all control; as a matter of fact with the End of the Age and the Gathering of the Angels into the two groups, they have already lost control, and begin to think that as they see who their associates are now}…, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see You hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or sick or in prison, and did not minister to You?’ Then He will answer them, saying, ‘Assuredly, I say to you, inasmuch as you did not do it to one of the least of these, you did not do it to Me.’ And these will also go away into everlasting punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” (Matthew 25:31-46)

A14-1:  ASPI Bible Outline on the Gospel of the King and the Kingdom.

Indeed, I think after this preliminary context of the Bible on the kingdom, especially in the teachings of Jesus, we are really to get into the teachings of the Apostle whose ministry it was to make things clear based on the Old Testament, and whose ministry it was to personally write 14 out of 27 of the NT books, sponsoring 3 others.  We will do it in much the same manner that the Apostle Paul started his research for those books during the 7 silent years at Tarsus where he recorded on parchments all the OT quotes that he would later include in books.  Of course, we have that body in our total Bible book outline of the Appendix, but now we focus largely on where Paul quotes from the OT in Hebrews and Romans.  We found a large bulk of that was in the 3 out of 12 topical outlines based on the book outline, and previously decided that for now that can be summarized as the Gospel of the King and the Kingdom.  Those three sections of the topical outline are included here for further development and expansion.  {You will also recall that the topical outline is found in chapter 3.}  The three subjects were respectively:  (1) what happened to the Jews as the chosen people of God’; (2) the salvation of God; and (3) the New King of Israel.

A14-2:  Divine Glory, Human Pride, and Self-destruction.

In this section we look particularly about this subject in Romans 1-3 & Hebrews 1-6.  {We can never appreciate how much better the new covenant  and the new sanctuary is than the old, how much easier it is for the children of Jesus not to fall like the children of God in the wilderness, until we see how much better our priest is than theirs, Jesus Christ the High Priest.}  Before we proceed deep into Romans and Hebrews guides by the 3 sections of the topical outline of the Bible, we need to determine how much Isaiah and God through Isaiah put in that book in the first place.  In other words, we need to both get a total feel for the subject content of Isaiah and make ourselves a simple outline. Isaiah is the most quoted prophet in the New Testament, and I think you have already noted some of its eloquence as compared to Jesus in Matthew.  John Oswalt writes of Isaiah in the NEW INTERNATIONAL COMMENTARY, “a revelation of the inevitable conflict between divine glory and human pride, of the self-destruction which that pride must bring, and of the grace of God in restoring that destroyed humanity to himself.”  And you can see how Paul would get a similar total message from reading Isaiah at Tarsus with the blinders removed, then writing notes for Romans 1 on the downward spiral of civilizations as “they knew God, but honored Him not as God”, and of how “God gave them up to a reprobate mind to do that which is inconvenient”.  And also it was a similar pride of the Jews of Romans 2 that led them to blaspheme God all over the world; and that would guide Paul in Romans 3 to prove that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” {it is here in Romans 3 that you will find quotes from Isaiah and Psalms, and of how the name of God is blasphemed among the nations is a direct quote from Isaiah 52:5, also from Ezekiel 36:22.}  Do we then have an outline heading for Romans 1-3 which also correlates with Isaiah, and which might be called something like “Divine Glory, Human Pride, and Self-destruction”, Romans 1-3’  And if so where would we have a similar section in Hebrews’  In a way, the whole book of Hebrews apart from Jesus as the High Priest is the story of the falling away of the Hebrew children in the wilderness because of unbelief, so that in order to narrow down to the cause in pride, and based on Isaiah, we must look at Hebrews more carefully.  For example, can we find the word “pride” per se in Hebrews when we look at a complete concordance’  No, pride is more an individual sin than labeled as a national sin in the Bible, but certainly in Hebrews 3 the “going astray in their heart” of the Hebrew children in the wilderness is an equivalent of national pride.  Hebrews does not outline 1-3 like Romans, the first 2 and 1/2 chapters must be considered a positive and straightforward presentation of the Son of God as King {although King is not mentioned, the concept of reigning, dominion, and subjection is there} with His kingdom {called His assembly} with a challenge to a faithfulness from the children of Jesus comparable to the faithfulness of Jesus Himself; then in 3:7-15 that awesome condemnation by God after He tested His original children in the wilderness that “they shall not enter My rest”. (Hebrews 3:19)

Hebrews 4:1-13 cautions present day children of Jesus not to fall into the same hardness of heart, and “hardness of heart” would be an equivalent of pride, and more.  You no doubt have noticed that the great subject of Jesus as High Priest with the supporting lawyer-like arguments from the OT and Paul start in 4:14-11, and continue in 6:13 thru 8:6.  The little interlude between 5:12 and 6:12 would be the equivalent of the Jewish chastisement of Romans 1-3, although the focus on Hebrews is less general here, being directed to the contemporary Hebrews, as you would expect, where Paul delivered his synagogue message.  Therefore:

  1. Divine Glory, Human Pride, and Self-destruction (Romans 1-3 and Hebrews 5:12-6:12)
  2. The de-evolution of civilizations that start off with a knowledge of God then without thought and honoring of God spiral downward to the point that God gives them over to a reprobate mind, Romans 1.
  3. Because of the history of the Jewish people and how they let God down, they blasphemed the name of God throughout the Gentile world, Romans 2.  They claimed God to be there God, and indeed He was at one time, but by their lack of faith in God, what happened inevitably to their nation was the blasphemy of the name of God.  We might briefly look at this in the context of the book of Isaiah, Isaiah 52:5; and what we find is by the mention of both the bondage in Egypt and the captivity in Assyria that the other nations of the world are saying, “God is the God of Israel and yet He cannot take care of them”, thus causing the name of God to be blasphemed among the Gentile nations.   Indeed, God could take care of them, and God did take care of them during the short periods when they kept the old covenant with Him, so that the real culprit was not a lack of power and love in God but rather in an “evil heart of unbelief” in the children of Israel.  Exactly what God had in mind is found in Ezekiel 36:22, where in captivity God through the Prophet Ezekiel promises a restoration of Israel to their own land.

“Moreover the word of the LORD came to me, saying:  Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it by their own ways and deeds {there, obvious is how it all started, during that approximately 1000 years in Palestine, or whatever it was called at the time, they defiled the land “by their own ways and deeds, and in a minute God is going to tell us through Ezekiel that the restoration of them to their land is going to be in order to protect His own name–of course, we know that He needed to get them there for Christ to be born, likewise another way in which He promoted and protected His own name}…”

“…to Me their way was like the uncleanness of a woman in her customary impurity. {pretty crude example but we get the picture}

“Therefore, I poured out My fury on them for the blood they had shed on the land {now, we get the bloody picture}, and for their idols with which they had defiled it.  {Israel actually defiled the chosen land of God, and I don’t know if I will ever understand why God loves that particular land so much} The fury of God on the land in two ways:  (1) the innocent blood of their own people and strangers in the land that they unjustly spilled on the land; and (2) by setting up places in the land for the worship of the idols.  Does God care more about the land than the people’  No, I don’t think so; it is only that He blesses and curses the land and the people at the same time, and that He does it based on the good and bad behavior of the people.  You must see in idols a violation of the first commandments of God, and mistreatment of the people as the violation of the rest of the ten commandments!

HERE IS WHAT GOD DID AND NOBODY ELSE, because He only is the Great Maker of Nations and History–”So I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed throughout the countries; I judged them according to their ways and their deeds.”

“When they came to the nations, wherever they went {the northern kingdom of Israel was scattered into Assyria and the southern kingdom of Judah was taken captive into Babylon and Persia}, they profaned My holy name–when they said of them {okay here it comes, exactly how Israel blasphemed the name of God and what Paul back at Tarsus read for later writing of Romans}, ‘These are the people of the LORD {what a sorry looking lot, the nations were saying}, and yet they have gone out of His land.’  {We must acknowledge that land as God’s in a special way even though we now Israel to have been cut off from God shortly after they cutoff the Messiah.}

“But I had concern for My holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations wherever they went.  Therefore, say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God:  I do not do this for your sake, O house of Israel, but for My holy name’s sake {don’t forget at any time that Jesus was the seed and the namesake of God the Father}, which you have profaned among the nations wherever you went.”  {Paul certainly did not exaggerate when he skirted over this with one short verse!}  “And I will sanctify My great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in their midst; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD,’ says the Lord God, ‘when I am hallowed in you before their eyes.’”  {when any of the children of God are living in such a way as to bring glory to God, God is hallowed in the eyes of the people and nations around them}

  1. The Son of God and His children of the house of God and the assembly, His ministry as High Priest, and how those present children could fall away from the living God as the children of Israel did in the 40 years of wilderness wanderings, Hebrews 1-8:6.

(1).  The Son of God, Angels, man, and salvation.  Hebrews 1:1-2:9.

(2).  The children whom God gave to Jesus, Hebrews 2:10-5:11, and the provision of a competent High Priest to keep those children as faithful as Jesus was faithful in the carrying out of His obligations to God.

(3).  It is a worrisome sign when the Hebrews cannot be real spiritual teachers, having the need to look again at the first doctrines of God, Hebrews 5:12-6:12.  It comes close to being a blasphemy of the name of God of Romans, Isaiah, and Ezekiel.  We know the famous saying, “if you can’t do, then teach”; well, the equivalent of what God is saying, and God through Paul is, “if you can’t teach then you can’t do!”

  1. There is none that can claim to be righteous, Jew or Gentile, for “all have sinned and come short” of what God meant for humanity, Romans 3.

A14-3: Appendix OT Book Outline of the Bible on Romans 1-3 and Hebrews 1-6.

{By the way you know Paul and how his lawyer-like arguments run on and on across chapters and verse, remembering also that the chapters and verses came much later and were not part of the original manuscripts; there will be serious overlaps, and an outline is only for our convenience to somewhat isolate the subjects in order to eventually get at the same truth.  What I am saying is that there are many ways to outline Romans and Hebrews as you know, and as I have done in previous commentaries.  And these are not efforts to impress you with the complete Bible outlines that have been made during the writing of Bible commentaries over the last 20 or more years, but just to allow both of us to benefit from the Bible research of the past.}  Recall that the OT book outline of the Appendix is different from the Topical Bible Outline of chapter 3 primarily in that the OT quotes of the Appendix outline relate more to the Gospel.  Of course, expect a lot of overlap as both outlines came from a complete outline of the OT in the NT arranged in a most probable outline of OT books.  While you will notice that in our Bibles, the major Prophets regardless of historical periods are grouped together, likewise the minor Prophets, and the literature of praise and poetry, so on and on.  Well, in the outline of the OT quotes, the controlling column of their location in the OT, runs from Genesis to Malachi in a more probable historical sequence.  It was from this top outline, generated in my original ONE Commentaries, that a topical outline was developed, and based on that outline, of the Bible.  {That is the one you see in chapter 3.}  Now, the Gospel outline of the appendix, likewise has the more historical sequencing; however, the quotes are less and more selective in that they center around the Gospel in the Old and New Testaments.  However, you must see from your Bibles that there is not a large difference between the total message of the Bible and the Gospel of the Bible.  It is only that the Gospel in the Old and New Testaments is a subset of the larger total story of the Bible.

Scanning through those 12 tables of the Appendix from Genesis to Malachi, we find that Romans 1-3 and Hebrews 1-6 are found 17 times:  (1) Hebrews 1:5 from Psalm 2:7 with Matthew 3:17 and Luke 9:7; (2) Romans 2:6 from Psalm 8:4-6; (3) Romans 3:10 from Psalm 14:1-3; (4) Hebrews 2:12 from Psalm 22:22; (5) Hebrews 1:11 from Psalm 42:1; (6) Hebrews 1:8 from Psalm 45:6,7 {notice by the way how most of these quotes stand-alone; that is only in Hebrews and Romans, and if it were not for the life and writing of Paul, we would never have had the Christian interpretation of those OT quotes, that is not the ASI, but that is one of the major reasons Jesus called Paul to the ministry}; (7) Hebrews 3:15 from Psalm 95:7,8; (8) Hebrews 3:7 from Psalm 95:7-11; (10) Hebrews 1:7 from Psalm 104:4; (11) Hebrews 1:8 from Psalm 104:8,9; (12) Hebrews 1:13 from Psalm 110:1 {and can’t you just see Paul at Tarsus reading through the book of Psalms as listed above from say 44 to 95 and 110 making notations on a research manuscript for later incorporation into letters, then checking them off as they were included, but finding in prison that he had some that still needed to be utilized to write three additional books of the Bible, one for John Mark and two for Dr. Luke, perhaps even one for the Apostle John}; and (13) Hebrews 5:6 and Hebrews 7:21 from Psalm 110:4–and here we must briefly pause since we have an obvious overlap between Hebrews and Romans much like those that were mentioned at the beginning of chapter 7.

What is so significant about the subject of Psalm 110:4 that Paul would duplicate his efforts by quoting the same verse in both Hebrews 5:6 and then in Hebrews’  First, we should look at Psalm 110:4, and perhaps even in the larger context of Psalms.

“The LORD has sworn and will not relent, you are a priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek.” (Psalm 110:4)

Melchizedek is introduced in Genesis 14:18 whereas king of Salem, also the priest of the Most High God, he brought out bread and wine to Abraham, blessed Abraham, and then received tithes of Abraham.  And I hope you have certainly seen the importance of children of Jesus not falling away like the children of Israel in the wilderness because the children of Jesus have the High Priesthood of Jesus.  He was in all points tempted like as we are yet without sin; He was declared to be the Son of God by God Himself and made higher than the angels with the angels as His ministers; He was appointed by God to reign at His right hand with the large haul plan of putting all His enemies as His footstool {it is difficult to know whether to call this the long haul or not since while it was long in history from before the Creation of the earth and man through all the sins and ups and downs of the chosen people of Israel, through the kingdom of Jesus which He made obvious on earth, through the great commission of believe and be baptized being carried across the earth, to the Falling Away; however, eternity is so much longer than those thousands of years that in an eternal perspective it may not seem like a long haul}.

And the last four quotes in Romans 1-3 and Hebrews 1-6 are:  (14) Hebrews 2:13 from Isaiah 8:17; (15) Romans 2:24 from Isaiah 52:5; (16) Hebrews 5:33ff from Isaiah 66:1; and (17) Romans 1:17 from Habakkuk 2:4.

A14-4:  17 Old Testament Quotes in Romans 1-3 and Hebrews 1-6.

This will have to be a Rapid Subject Scan of those 17 quotes from the OT in Romans 1-3 and Hebrews 1-6.  It would require far too many pages of this commentary to list those seventeen passages from both the Old Testament and Romans and Hebrews.  Instead I will read through them in New Testament sequence, first Hebrews and then Romans {the most probable order of writing for Paul or at least original development as the book of Hebrews is obviously his synagogue address}, with the total context scanned in order to get first a gist of the OT context, then a gist of the NT interpretation by Paul, and lastly a summary of the gist of both.  Perhaps you as a reader with your Bible at hand would like to do the same thing.  After all, this commentary, volume 3 of the LEARN CHRIST commentaries is considered to only be a study guide to the Bible.  Each must read and study the Word of God for himself!

  1. Hebrews 1:5 and Psalm 2:7. {By the way does it sort of surprise you that a beginning quote in the first chapter of Hebrews, would also come from one of the first chapters of the book of Psalms, like Paul was reading through Psalm and made a note for the beginning of a book of Hebrews.}

(1).  A gist of Psalm 2:7 and the context:  Although we do not know for sure when the “today” was that God made the decree that Jesus was His only begotten Son, we know at least it had to be before creation of the universe since Jesus was there as the mediating cause {John 1}, but we know also from the context of Psalm 2 that God has already decreed all the nations as Jesus inheritance and the ends of the earth for His possession.  This, without a use of the word king except to mention the kings of the earth who had best kiss the Son while they can, is an inheritance of kingship and an everlasting kingdom as you see from such words as “He shall break them with a rod of iron” and “He shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel” (Psalm 2:9)  While we do not see that yet, and did not see it when Jesus refused to fight during His first life on earth; we will see it when He comes again, not so much with fighting but rather in the use of the forces of nature as the old universe disintegrates and in the use of the angels to gather all humanity for judgment at the Second Coming.  {You remember how the angels will gather the sheep and the goats, separating them, the tares and the wheat separating them; and then Jesus will pronounce the group judgment.  I am sure the angels based on the roll call of the book of life in heaven have studied and taken their assignments before they deploy to the four corners of the earth.}

(2).  A gist of the ASPI of Hebrews 1:5:  the context is that Paul shows how much greater Jesus is than the angels, amassing one quote after another from God decreed Him begotten and His Son from Psalm 2:7 to the Father and Son relationship of II Samuel 7:14 to the call for the angels of God to worship Jesus of Psalm 97:7 to how serious even the angels are as ministers of fire of Psalm 104:4 to Jesus as the King of the Kingdom of Psalm 45:6,7 with a scepter of righteousness to a reminder that how Jesus was there as part of Creation in Psalm 102:25-27 right up to domination with His kingship and kingdom as all enemies become His footstool of Psalm 110:1.  {Did you notice how that also generally progresses through the book of Psalms, and by the reading of Paul, from Psalm 2 to Psalm 110 with only a few minor permutations that Paul found necessary in order to present the arguments like a lawyer that he was.}

(3).  A gist of both summarized:  As great as is the subject of Jesus, His Kingship and His Kingdom, Paul knows that Christians can read this for themselves in the OT, but what he wants to do for us is to show how that is in order “to minister for those who will inherit salvation” (Hebrews 1:14), wow!  It is of course, a very introduction to the book of Hebrews and to the message that he delivered to the Jewish synagogue {I guess their favorite word was Hebrews} all over the Roman Empire.  You do not need to fall away as the Hebrews did in the wilderness as you have so much more going for you with the angels as ministers, with Jesus as your perfect and competent high priest at the perfect position on the right hand of God to make intercession always for your sins, with the perfect new covenant and the perfect new tabernacle, and with so many examples of faith for you like a large cloud of witness.  How can you lose, if you beware of a possible “evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God”?  You can get a “god” whom you can deceive yourself and your church into thinking is the real God, a God unlike that of the Bible and of Jesus, that allows whatever you want; but he or it is not the living God like Phillips warned in “Your God is too Small”.  {In this day and time, a “god”, not living except inside contemporaries, has been made of conscience–I do what my conscience tells me to do–which accuses and excuses like it should, but imperfectly; and that American conscience with the weight of the American Democratic Faith has been placed as a substitute for the living God.}

  1. {Since we effectively covered all those quotes of Hebrews 1 above, we will pass on to Hebrews 2 and following.} There are 3 great quotes in Hebrews 2 with some greater ASI:  Psalm 8:4-8 in Hebrews 6-8 where the glory, praises, and dominion of man over the works of creation are saluted–a work that is still incomplete in that “now we do not yet see all things put under him” (Hebrews 2:8b), so that we know the promise of that is still to come in Hebrews; Psalm 22:22 in Hebrews 2:12 where Jesus establishes an assembly where He praises the name of God before His chosen brethren {that is an assembly and worship service where we would like to be when Jesus praises God as we are in the congregation, but that is one of the main points that Paul is making–we are, we are in the assembly of the firstborn that Paul comes to in Hebrews 12, and that is what we have come to as we have gone through the truth of the 12 chapters of Hebrews}; and third  Isaiah 8:17, 18, and II Samuel 22:3 in Hebrews 2:13.

“And again:  ‘I will put My trust in Him.’  And again:  ‘Here am I and the children whom God has given Me.’”  (Hebrews 2:13 with Isaiah 8:17,18 and II Samuel 22:3)

  1. That is a good introduction to Hebrews: here we are, us and Jesus, and that is exactly what Paul encouraged Jews with night and day when he had the opportunity.  It either is or can be, You and Jesus!  It is also a good introduction to Hebrews and Romans as the Gospel of the King and the Kingdom as the King is introduced here as the Reigning Son of God, and the kingdom is introduced as us, the children of Jesus.  What exciting things remain for us to see in Hebrews of how through Jesus, and under the plan of salvation from God, we mortals who have been ordained to have dominion over all the things of the earth, will ultimately have all these things put under us.  This in Hebrews is truly the equivalent of Romans 8 and the thought that “all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose”.  (Romans 8:28)

A14-5: “Man Dominions” of Hebrews and “all things work together” of Romans.

In particular we look at the similarities of the man dominions of Hebrews with the all things work together for our good of Romans.  I think we will find some of those same things of Jesus, God, and the Holy Spirit, predestination, foreknowledge, and the calling working together for us in both Romans and Hebrews; and this is another overlap, perhaps even a major focus point between Hebrews and Romans.

  1. First we look at the similarity of thought of Hebrews 2:8-18 and Romans 8. Obviously when in Hebrews 2:8 Paul quotes from David to the extent that God has “put all things in subjection under his feet” {and you recall how the first commission of God to man was to have dominion over all His other works of Creation}, then immediately saying after the quote to the extent THAT WE DON’T SEE IT THAT WAY YET, and that you immediately suspect that what we do not have dominion over is death, sin, and eternal life which before Paul discusses those very things in Hebrews 2:14-18, he must show in the context how Jesus and Us have come together, “I and the children whom God has given me”.  Hebrews 2:14 mentions how that Jesus as He accepted this oneness with us, partaking of flesh and blood, was able to establish dominion over (1) the power of death; (2) over the fear of death which held humanity in bondage that prevented real victory over the earth and the things of the earth; (3) over the devil himself; and (4) over sins in that Jesus Himself with that full identification with man also became “propitiation for the sins of the people” (2:17); and (5) provided help in the temptations that come this way on earth.

A14-6:  Now, how similar is that to Romans 8?

In other words what are “the all things” of the “all things that work together for our good” of Romans 8’  God gave the first commission to man to have dominion over the earth at the moment of the creation of man as recorded in Genesis 1:26.

“Then God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over the cattle, over all the earth and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth….Then God blessed them, and God said to them, ‘Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth.’”  (Genesis 1:26,28)

And God renewed that first commission to man by way of Noah after the Flood as recorded in Genesis 9:1,2.

“So, God blessed Noah and his sons, and said to them:  “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth.  And the fear of you and the dread of you shall be on every beast of the earth, on every bird of the air, on all that move on the earth, and on all the fish of the sea.  They are given unto your hand.”  (Genesis 9:1,2)

This first commission is echoed with different words in Psalms 8:4-6 as quoted in Hebrews 2:6-8, and we especially see that with the last words of that quote, in the “And set him over the works of Your hands”, amplified by the following sentence of “You have put all things in subjection under his feet”.  There is an astounding significance to the way the argument flows by Paul in the rest of verse 8 as Paul explains “put all things in subjection under his feet” {and you hear Paul talking in the same kind of wording as of II Corinthians 15 where all things are put in subjection under the feet of Christ, but excepted is God the Father}, but as yet we do not see all things put under Man.  We stop to wonder whether Man Himself or the Son of Man, the Lord Jesus Christ, is going to do this; for we know that immediately Paul launched back off into Jesus:  made a little lower than the angels when coming to earth, like man is a little lower than the angels; and for suffering and death in order that Jesus might taste death for “everyone” (2:9)  God, the argument continues, chose the method of bringing “many sons to glory” to make Captain Jesus, the captain of their salvation, perfect through sufferings. (2:10)  Jesus calls them “brethren” because He and they “are all of one” (2:11), Jesus is the He who sanctifies, and they are the sanctified.  The children partake of flesh and blood (2:14), Jesus shared in the same; that through death He might destroy him, the devil, who had the power of death {we often think of Satan or the devil as the prince of the power of the air, seldom do we stop to think of him likewise as controlling the power of death}; and release the brethren from the fear and bondage of death (2:15).

“Therefore, in all things He had to be made like His brethren, that He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people.  For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted.”  (Hebrews 2:17,18)

The real question is that in all of the rest of Hebrews, and also where else in the whole Bible, is there a repeat of the argument of the second half of 2:8b, based on the quote of 2:8a.  First, we will check for the key words of “subjection under his feet” of 2:8b.  The only close similarity we find in Hebrews is in 12:9 where the subjection is of the children to God the Father, who like earthly fathers chasten us, but the Heavenly Father to make us partakers of His holiness.  However, we do in Romans 8:18,19 see a similar argument from Paul of passing from a lack of dominion over all things on the earth to a dominion over death and sin. {It is only complete in considering all the way from 5:12 through 8:39.}

“For I consider the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.  {Rather than from the perspective of all men trying to have dominion on the whole earth, it is a more a present time start with the sufferings of this earth–which could be close to the things not overcome–and then progressing all the way to the glories that shall be revealed in our future of eternal life, of course which we most generally call “glorification”.}  “For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly awaits {and certainly you can see in this reference to creation some of the first great commission to have complete dominion, though now it is an inward thrust, an eager expectation} for the revealing of the sons of God.”  {You cannot miss how the brethren here become also the sons of God, much like Jesus.}  And this is consistent with the Apostle John.

“But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God {we also like the KJV of “sons of God”}, to those who believe in His name:  who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.”  (John 1:12,13 NJKV)

A14-7: Some Definitions in Romans 4-8 and Hebrews 7-12:2.

Definition of Righteousness by Faith, Peace, and the New Covenant, and New Sanctuary, Romans 4-8 and Hebrews 7-12:2.  The argument above of Romans 8:18,19 continues all the way to the “all things work together for our good” of 8:28 in the following manner:  (1) the whole creation was subjected to futility by God, but by God in hope, and it is that whole creation that will be delivered from the bondage of corruption {you see the similarity of the Hebrew argument of under dominion instead of over it} into a glorious liberty of the children of God {of course you see the children of Jesus that are called brethren and which Jesus identifies of Hebrews in this}; (2) the whole creation together–the earth, the man, the woman, the animals, the plant life, and the forces of nature–like a woman in birth pangs “groans and labors” (8:22) right up to this very moment of time of the life of Paul, and the assumption is that will continue in time until the end of the age {by the way talking of more of the similarities between Romans and Hebrews, we have here in the “whole creation groaning and laboring with birth pangs” a similarity to Hebrews 12:25-29 where the whole heaven and earth will be shaken; and also by the way, what shall we receive in that passage of Hebrews but “a kingdom which cannot be shaken” (12:28)}; (3) we that have the firstfruits of the Spirit {the new birth, of course is the firstfruit, the process of Christlikeness called sanctification is the continuing fruit, and the final fruit is the glorification when we shall be like Christ for we shall see Him as He is} also groan inwardly like the rest of creation groans as we look forward to the complete redemption of our physical bodies; (4) The Holy Spirit helps us during these struggling’s and makes intercession for us; (5) Jesus in touch with the Spirit makes intercession to God for our sins.  Now, these are all the things that work together for the good of those who love God and are the called according to His purpose.  For this point, and in 8:28-30 it progresses passes from (1) the purpose of God to (2) the foreknowledge of God of those whom He would call from before the foundation of the earth to (3) the predestination of God for those called to be conformed to the image of Christ, Christ the firstborn and the others His brethren sounding again like Hebrews to (4) the Christian calling with the hope of the one calling to (5) the legal justification in the sight of God to (6) the glorification.

NOTE:  We are in the process of receiving a kingdom, although within us now and cannot be seen as it is in heaven, cannot be shaken like this old earth and heaven will continue to shake until disintegration, because this kingdom of God and heaven and which will be lowered form earth to heaven is unshakable, much like God Himself.

  1. From this point of harmony between Hebrews 2:8-18 and Romans 8:18-39, we can proceed backwards through the rest of Romans 8, then 7, then 6, and then 5:12-21 thru the argument developments of respectively (1) Sonship through the Spirit, the adoption; (2) freedom from inward sin; (3) freedom from the law; (4) slave hood to sin or to God; (5) death to sin and alive to God; and (6) death in Adam and life in Christ.

(1).  We are the Sons of God if we are led by the Spirit of God, Romans 8:12-17.

(2).  Freedom from the condemnation of God if we live according to the Spirit instead of according to the flesh, Romans 8:1-11.

(3).  Jesus Christ will deliver us from this body of sin and death, Romans 7:13-25.

(4).  Another dominion that has been overcome is that of the law, Romans 7:1-12

(5).  From a slave to sin to a slave to righteousness, Romans 6:15-23.

(6). The One Baptism by which we are baptized spiritually into the death and resurrection of Christ Himself, Romans 6:1-14.

  1. Again working backwards to cover all of Romans 4-8, we go from 5:12-21 as the last part of the above through the rest of 5:1-5 on how faith triumphs over trouble, after considering the short passage of 5:6-11 where Christ died for the ungodly; then to 4:9-25 where Paul makes another legal argument, this time of how Abraham was justified before circumcision; and then right up to 4:1-8 on justification by faith.

A14-8: The Word “Baptism” in the New Testament.

Since we have discussed “believe” more than “baptism” in the chapters since chapter 4 on BAPTISM, this would be a good point at which to look at all the references in the New Testament where “baptism” is used.  The word in the King James Version is found 23 times in the New Testament, and it is easily grouped into several major divisions.

  1. The Baptism message from John the Baptist, both a water baptism and an immersion (baptism) in repentance before water baptism.

(1).  Matthew 3:7.  When John the Baptist saw Pharisees and Sadducees, the religious leaders of the day, coming for his baptism (s), he called them “vipers” and told them to bring to the water baptism a prerequisite of “fruits worthy of repentance.”

(2).  Matthew 21:25. (also repeated in Mark 11:30 and Luke 20:4) When later some of these same religious leaders , this time the chief priests and elders, questioned the authority of Jesus to deliver His teachings, asked them whether the “baptism of John” had the authority of being from heaven or from men.

(3).  Mark 1:4.  (also repeated in Luke 3:3) You have in this verse the two distinct baptisms of John, not unlike the two baptisms into Jesus of water baptism with a prerequisite baptism of salvation:  (a).  Water baptism, “John came baptizing in the wilderness”; and (b) Baptism of repentance, “and preaching a baptism of repentance for the remission of sins”.  Since there is some repentance in real faith and some faith in real repentance, you would have to say that the two baptisms of John the Baptist were almost the same as the two baptisms from the Apostles.  However, where there is any element of doubt such as Paul encountered in believers who had only know the two baptisms of John, then they were more carefully instructed on salvation and then baptized.

(4).  Luke 7:29.  There were cases of people, like the tax collectors, who having participated in the two baptisms of John the Baptist, were doubtless saved in that they “justified God”, those two baptisms having, Jesus taught, come from God; and there were the opposite cases of the Pharisees and lawyers who rejected “the will of God for themselves” by rejecting the baptism of John the Baptist.

(5).  Acts 1:22.  This baptism of John was as much a part of the Gospel of Jesus Christ that an Apostle selected to take the place of Judas Iscariot must know about as well as all that Jesus did and said in the presence of the disciples, from that beginning time of the Gospel until the Ascension, and witness of the Resurrection.

(6).  Acts 10;37.  We must be careful that those who know only the baptism of repentance of John, sorrow for sins toward God, know also the baptism of faith of the Gospel.  What is most important again, is not the two water baptisms, but the inward baptism of both repentance and faith.  The Apostle Peter does in this verse in telling what has just happened in Israel make a fine point of distinction between “the preaching peace through Jesus Christ” and the start of that preaching that God gave Jesus “after the baptism which John preached”.

(7).  Acts 13:24.  You can also see in the early preaching of the Apostle Paul in Antioch in Pisidia that fine point of distinction between before the coming of Jesus, when “John first preached before His coming the baptism of repentance to all the people of Israel”, and the point in history after that when Jesus made His public appearance to John and Israel, where the message of John became more that he was not the Christ but the Christ came shortly after Him.  In order to participate in the One Baptism of salvation, it is important to know both repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ; and then water baptism is to be an enacted sermon and act of faith in a work that comes behind it.  And then if there was any question as to whether that one baptism of salvation actually happened in the individual because they did not hear all the words of faith necessary for that salvation to happen, then after they really hear and believe, let them be baptized again.  Baptism by water and immersion is so easy; and while it has nothing to do with salvation, it should be done properly and only after sufficient faith baptism.

(8).  Acts 19:1-5.  When Paul rebaptized disciples at Ephesus, it was after they admitted that they did not receive inwardly the Holy Spirit which always comes with the One Baptism.  In other words, it was obvious that there was no real salvation in their life.  Unfortunately, the Pentecostals in just one of their major departures from sound doctrine–and they have many similar violations of Scripture as given in I and II Corinthians all generated by a unjustified pride in the uniqueness of their church membership such as “the Word came out of them”, “the Word came to them only”, “everyone has a song, a prophecy, or a word”, worship that draws attention to themselves, has an uncertain sound and breeds confusion, and a speaking in tongues which are not really languages, always of questionable motivations–have run amuck with a baptism for salvation and then a second blessing baptism of the Spirit. No, the consistent message of the Bible is that the One Baptism of Salvation is also an immersion of the Holy Spirit, most often called the new birth.  Of course, the work of the Spirit does continue through the many years, however not instantaneous, as He works to make the believer more Christ-like.  In all these cases sound doctrine dictates:  first comes the Baptism of Salvation, and then comes Water Baptism.

  1. Jesus used the word “baptism” for immersion to refer to the blanketing of persecutions that would come His faith in rejection and crucifixion, which also would be the type of immersion that the Apostles would have.

(1).  Matthew 20:22 and 20:23 (also repeated in Mark 10:38 and 10:39 and Luke 12:50) refer to this kind of baptism of the cross and suffering that the Apostles would share with Him.

  1. The Baptism of Salvation, the One Baptism.

(1).  Romans 6:4.  As Paul’s great treatment and definition of the One Baptism in Romans 6 and Romans before he refers back to it in Ephesians as the One Baptism, and where by the way as discussed in this commentary where all the great basic doctrines of the Bible are mentioned as “ONEs” and where there is not One for salvation.  There is no need, that is the One Baptism.  Read Ephesians 4:4-6 and then come back to Romans 6 to define the one baptism.  Well, here is some of it:  (1) when we are “baptized into Jesus” we are baptized into the death of Jesus–another way Paul says this in Galatians 2:20 is that “we are crucified with Christ”.  How are we crucified with Christ’  When we go down into the river or the baptistry to be immersed, or even when we have a nudge to start speaking in tongues’  No, how can we be crucified in water or speak tongues in water!  (2)  Even as Christ was raised from the dead by the power of God, so are we in the new birth raised by the power of God to walk the style of a new life.

(2). Ephesians 4:4-6, the Great Major Doctrines of Faith.  Ephesians is a condensed summary of all the 10 letters that Paul wrote before it with the great truths, teachings, and doctrines of the Christian Faith, and Ephesians 4:4-6 summarizes in turn Ephesians.

“There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.”  (Ephesians 4:4-6)

Is there only one baptism in Scripture; certainly not, there is only one major baptism that exceeds all the others in importance because it is the salvation of God.

(3).  Colossians 2:12.  In this similar language of Romans 6, “buried with Him in baptism”–by the way the message of Ephesians is also repeated in Colossians, so that Colossians like Ephesians is a summary of the first 10 books including Romans–you have a comparison of this salvation not only in terms of a one baptism but also for emphasis in terms of a “circumcision without hands”.  Even as the one baptism is a baptism without any words and any hands, so also is the one baptism like an inward circumcision where no hands work on the flesh and there is no work on the flesh.  You are reminded again of Peter’s statement about “not the putting away of the filth of the flesh”–in other words no water involved in this baptism–but rather the inward answer of a good conscience toward God.  So much of this distortion of water baptism as part of salvation, or as necessary for salvation, has come from the desire of church leaders, primarily at first the Catholics and then the Episcopalians and Lutherans and Anglicans and now the church of Christ and even others, to have control over and a part in your salvation.  Do not let them!

(4).  Hebrews 6:2.  These talks of the “doctrine of baptisms” {plural for baptisms} in such a way as to visit up to the realities of many baptisms in the Bible; but also, in such a way with “doctrine”, the singular, to note how they are related.  Does this allow for any such deceptive thing as a “baptism in the Spirit”, so called by the Pentecostals, which comes after the one baptism of salvation and even after water baptism. No!  However, it does allow as you read the context of the rest of Hebrews for a complete immersion in the Spirit over a period of time which most generally in Scripture is “sanctification”–a lifelong process–most often referred to, especially in Ephesians, as a growth into the full stature of Christ.  The problem with these Pentecostals is that they want sanctification instantaneously; they want to have the pride of a second blessing as unique Christians beyond what others have as they like the Gnostics gain a spiritual knowledge not possessed by other church members; and they want instant and easy evidence that they are the real children of God.  {You see that over and over in I and II Corinthians.}

(5).  I Peter 3:21.  You saw the exegesis of this in chapter 4 in this famous Scripture from the Apostle Peter of how the One Baptism is not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, therefore having nothing to do with water baptism.  Well, not nothing; they are related as one doctrine of many baptisms to the extent that the opposite of salvation, the immersion of the whole world in a flood, is related to the one salvation.

Preface:  Prophets to the Nations.


‘The only way the Old Testament Prophets can be out of date is if nations of the world are out of date, for God the ruler of the universe made the Prophets International Prophets, the “Prophet to the Nations”.  Since God is eternal, immutability, and determinative in world history, if you want to see and know where nations are ultimately headed then the Prophets are the key, and further if you want to know then end goal of all history, it is:  (1) the literal Forever Kingdom to such up all other nations and kingdoms, (2) the Day of the Lord with a “cup of wine of wrath” (Jeremiah 1:5;1:10; and 25:15) for most nations, and (3) After the Second Coming of Christ, God the Father plants New Jerusalem on His favorite spot of Mount Zion in its present location of Israel.

NOTE:  Lest you think the nations are out of date, the oft repeated islands of the seas takes care of many including the US, however in the language it again shows God preference for Mount Zion in Israel to plant both Himself and New Jerusalem.

Since God thinks that spot is so important, as we near the End of the world you notice that focus more and more becomes centered on the Middle East and in particular on Megiddo Israel and the Jezreel valley as the site of World War III, the terminal war to end all wars.  Take Damascus as an example, now in Syria and the attention of much of the internal strife in Syria, and you must stop to consider that once it was part of the Northern Kingdom (10 tribes) of Israel as they separated from Judah of the Southern Kingdom, that in the Samaria of the first century Roman Empire, Jesus preached at Jacob’s well to the Samaritan woman about the water of life, and later in Damascus of Samaria Paul on the way to persecute Christians there saw a vision of the Ascended Christ and was converted, later believers were first called Christians in Antioch of Samaria.

“Let the nations be wakened, and come up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat; for there I will sit to judge all the surrounding nations.  Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.  Come, go down; for the whimpers is full, the vats overflow–for their wickedness is great.  Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!  For the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.  The sun and moon will grow dark, and the stars will diminish their brightness.  The LORD also will roar from Zion, and utter His voice from Jerusalem; the heavens and earth will shake; but the LORD will be shelter for His people, and the strength of the children of Israel.”  (Joel 3:12-16)

It is easy to tire of all these predictors of the END, such as the one correlating Turkey with Damascus and Israel as Turkey (we have no evidence now that Turkey will be the prime attacker, but the indications are for Syria, Iran, and Russia); however this sensationalist bases his predictions of the Old Testament Prophets on the complete destruction of Damascus, perhaps the oldest continuance city in the world.  Take for example the Prophet Isaiah’s proclamation against Syria and Israel, in particular against Damascus once a powerful and prosperous city in the world from Isaiah 17.

“The burden against Damascus.

“Behold, Damascus will cease from being a city,
And it will be a ruinous heap.” (Isaiah 17:1)

Granted that Damascus has been destroyed and rebuilt many times, one notable being when Assyria took the Northern Kingdom captive and deported most of the residents filling the city and Northern Kingdom with other foreign immigrants, but as you read these words and the rest of Isaiah 17 you get as Carroll states a sense of partial fulfillments of a prediction to be completely fulfilled at or near the END.  If you have opportunity read please Isaiah 17 and you will note that it stresses often “in that day” with a reminder of the Day of the LORD and Lord of the whole Bible; and you can not help but think with the total message of 17, especially with the bottom line of 17:12-14, that this is the same cup of wine of the wrath of God as with the other Prophets.

Woe to the multitude of many people
Who make a noise like the roar of the seas,
And to the rushing of nations
That make a rushing like the rushing of mighty waters!
13 The nations will rush like the rushing of many waters;
But God will rebuke them and they will flee far away,
And be chased like the chaff of the mountains before the wind,
Like a rolling thing before the whirlwind.
14 Then behold, at eventide, trouble!
And before the morning, he is no more.
This is the portion of those who plunder us,
And the lot of those who rob us.  (Isaiah 17:12-14)

P-1:    To the Nations — Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and Isaiah

We must distinguish between these four major Writing Prophets.  If God called Jeremiah to be a Prophet to the nations, and He did, how is it that Daniel, Ezekiel, and Isaiah also had much to say about the destiny of the nations, yet were not called Prophets to the nations; or were they?

First, the call of Jeremiah, the priest, to be a Prophet.

“I have appointed thee a prophet unto the nations….I have this day set thee over the nations and over the kingdoms, to pluck up and to break down, to destroy and to overthrow….Take this cup of wine of wrath at my hand, and cause all the nations to whom I send thee to drink it.”  (Jeremiah 1:5;1:10; and 25:15)

Our problem is that nowhere are we told that Jeremiah actually visited other nations, except Egypt near the end of his ministry.  Somehow we know that Jeremiah delivered these messages to the 21 nations that are named after 25:27, since he tells us in 25:27 that he did take the cup at Jehovah’s hand and caused all those 21 nations to drink of it.  He must have either visited these nations or wrote down the messages and sent them to the nations to read.  Is there the possibility that he did some of the work through Ezekiel and Daniel.  Ezekiel and Daniel were already captives to the North.  Ezekiel was taken captive to Babylon in 598 B.C. where he like Jeremiah preached the destruction of Judah and Jerusalem.  Daniel was taken captive earlier, in 605 B.C., the first year of Nebuchadnezzar invasion of Syria and Palestine.  While Jeremiah and Ezekiel were both priests, Daniel was a statesman and governor.  Ezekiel was called to be a Prophet five years after with King Jehoiachin he was taken captive to Babylon.

It is clear from the call of Ezekiel to be a Prophet recorded in Ezekiel 1,2 that Ezekiel was called to be a Prophet only to Israel in Exile.  The call begins with in the first chapter a vision from God.

“Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the LORD.  And when I saw it, I fell upon my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking (Ezekiel 1:29)…And he said to me, ‘Son of man, sand upon your feet, and I will speak with you.’  And when he spoke to me, the Spirit entered into me and set me upon my feet; and I heard him speaking to me.  And he said to me, ‘Son of man, I send you to the people of Israel, to a nation of rebels, who have rebelled against me; they and their fathers have transgressed against me to this very day.  The people also are impudent and stubborn:  I send you to them; and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD.’  And whether they hear or refuse to hear (for they are a rebellious house) they will know that there has been a prophet among them.”  (Jeremiah 2:1-5 RSV)

What a ministry as a Prophet, to Israel a nation of rebels who may not listen to him, and that the bottom line of his ministry is that the people must know that there is a prophet of God among them.

The beginning of Daniel is more historical that a call to be a Prophet like Jeremiah and Ezekiel.

“In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it.  And the Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and placed the vessels in the treasury of his god.  Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch, to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility, youths without blemish, handsome and skillful in all wisdom, endowed with knowledge, understanding learning, and competent to serve in the king’s palace, and to teach them the letters and language of the Chaldeans….Among them were Daniel, Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.”  (Daniel 1:1-4,6  RSV)

I think herein we have found a way that some of Jeremiah’s messages to the nations could get at least to the Chaldeans.  As we know from the history of Daniel in Chaldea,  Daniel became a leader in the palace of the kings.

P-2:  Messages to Five Nations.

Also Jeremiah 27 tells us of how the messages got to five kings of the 21.

“In the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, ‘Thus says the LORD to me:  ‘Make for yourselves bonds and yokes, and put them on your neck, and send them to the king of Edom the king of Moab, the king of the Ammonites, the king of Tyre, and the king of Sidon, by the hand of the messengers who come to Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah.”  (Jeremiah 27:1-3 NJKV)

It is interesting that the word came to Jeremiah as to what to do at the beginning of the reign of Jehoiakim, but it was to actually happened during the reign of Zedekiah.

Following the commission of Jeremiah of how to get messages to five of the nations, God gives the message.

(1).  The Great Maker of History explains Who He Is.

  1. LORD of hosts, the God of Israel.
  2. Creator of earth, man, and animals.
  3.   By His power and His arm that is active in history, this God has given the works of His Creation to whomever it seemed proper to Him.  (Wow, what a Great Maker of History!)

(2).  God tells them that He has given all these lands over into the hands of Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon who is His Servant.  (Jeremiah 27:5)

NOTE:  Hopefully in this context and the verse of Jeremiah 27:5, our concept and knowledge of progressive revelation in the Bible leads us to see how early in ancient history God let Himself be known, not only as the God of Israel, but also as the LORD of Hosts, alias the God of all nations and the Universe.

“I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are on the ground, by My great power and by My outstretched arm, and have given it to whom it seemed proper to Me.”  (Jeremiah 27:5)

And if you fail to see the control of God in human history and among nations operating here undeniable, then I feel sorry for you. Either you have a severe problem with intellectual honesty, or you have failed to comprehend this Scripture and many others which teach God as always and ever at work in human history.

  1. All nations shall serve him, his son, and his grandson
  2. The end of this reign is determined as “until the time of his land comes”.
  3. God will punish the nation that will not serve the king of Babylon with sword, famine, and pestilence.
  4. A warning not to listen to your nation’s prophets, your diviners, dreamers, soothsayers, and sorceress who tell you not to serve the king of Babylon.
  5. The nations that serve the king of Babylon, God will let them remain in their own land to till it and live in it.

These same words were spoken to King Zedekiah of Judah, also to the priests and the people., “Until the Time of His Land Comes”, no doubt a phrase that we have never heard and perhaps never read in the Bible; however, which not only implies but states:  (1) God sets the lands of the nations, past and present; (2) God determines the time in history that a nations will rise and fall.  The implications of this phrase and this scriptural context are awesome:  it implies, yes demands, that the same God who determined in detail all the nations and their boundaries will do the same today for the United States and their neighbors.  It would far harder to prove that God dealt that with nations in the Sixth Century B.C., then stopped.  In fact, we cannot possible believe that as we know that another Prophet about to considered in this chapter, Daniel, prophesied concerned the Greek and Roman nations as well as the everlasting kingdom of Christ.

Edom?  At first, it may confuse us to find that the promise is also to Edom as well as the other close neighbors of Judah, for we know that hundreds of years ago, the Prophet Obadiah, 840 B.C. recorded for God the prediction of the destruction of Edom, to the extent that the nation would disappear.  Now, here in Jeremiah during the reign of the last king of Judah,  Zedekiah (597-587 B.C.), it is finally in the patience and work of God to be executed.  Jeremiah 49:7-22 is almost identical to Obadiah, and the message of complete destruction the same.

“As when Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighbor cities were overthrown, says the LORD, no man shall dwell there, no man shall sojourn in her.”  (Jeremiah 49:18 RSV)

P-3:  Isaiah on Edom, Other Nations, and Earth’s End.

Like Carroll indicates, you go to Isaiah for the whole spread of Prophesy, both predictive and the message for the time.  The introductory words of Isaiah place it at a time before Jeremiah.

“The vision of Isaiah the sons of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.”  (Isaiah 1:1  RSV)

For one thing the well-established historical event of 710 B.C. from secular and Biblical history, the destruction of Sennacherib’s army, is at the center of Isaiah.  Also it is known from both histories that this same year marked the beginning of a great political movement in the Gentile World, the foundation of the Median monarchy that finally broke the yoke of Babylon.  Sampey writes of the period of Isaiah.

“Isaiah’s prophetic ministry covered the stirring period during which Assyria, under the leadership of Pul, Shalmaneser IV, Sargon, and Sennacherib, repeatedly invaded Syria and Palestine,  From his watch-tower Isaiah surveyed the nations, from Assyria and Elam on the east to Egypt and Ethiopia on the southwest, and Jehovah asserted by the mouth of His prophet, His sovereignty over all the earth.” 

Isaiah is the great landmark writing Prophet of the Bible, considered the prophet of Prophets.  Before him were Obadiah, Joel, Jonah, and Amos; contemporary with Isaiah were Hosea in Israel and Micah in Judah.  B.H. Carroll in his volumes of AN INTERPRETATION OF THE ENGLISH BIBLE divides the Writing Prophets into three Periods:  first, the Prophets of the Assyrian Period–Obadiah, Joel, Jonah, Amos, Hosea, Isaiah, Micah, and Nahum; secondly, the Prophets of the Chaldean Period–Zephaniah, Habakkuk, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel; and thirdly the Persian Period–Haggai, Zechariah, and Malachi.  Isaiah 13-23 is called “The Book of Foreign Prophecies” as it deals with these other nations around Judah and Israel.  Messages are recorded for ten foreign nations and in this order:  Babylon, Assyria, Philistia, Moab, Damascus, Ethiopia, Egypt, Dumah, Arabia, and Tyre.

Dumah is Edom in this list:  that is found in Isaiah 34.  Yet the passage of Isaiah 34 implies much more scatological judgement than on Edom, as if Edom has become a symbol of all on whom God will rain out His final wrath.  You see both the eschatological and the general nature of world judgment at the beginning of chapter 34.

“Come near, you nations, (see, to all nations), to hear; and heed, you people!  Let the earth hear, and all that is in it, the world and all things that come forth from it.  For the indignation of the LORD is against all nations, and His fury against all their armies;  He has utterly destroyed them, He has given them over to the slaughter….All the host of heaven shall be dissolved, and the heavens shall be rolled up like a scroll; all their host shall fall down.”  (Isaiah 34:1-4 NJKV)

In the last verse you see God’s judgment on the heavens as well as the earth, definitely an eschatological event of the end of the last days.  But one thing that will help us in our study is that we can see judgment against the particular nation named Edom has already been pronounced.

Isaiah deals with many nations in his book.  A summary follows.

“An oracle concerning Dumah:  Someone calls to me from Seir, ‘Watchman, what is left of the night?  Watchman, what is left of the night?’  The watchman replies, ‘Morning is coming, but also the night.  If you would ask, then ask; and come back yet again.’”  (Isaiah 21:11-12 NIV)

Isaiah on Devastation of the Earth

While God is letting Isaiah know and tell all about the destruction of nations, and some with eschatological content, He lays the ultimate devastation on the earth.  This is one of the few times that it is so clearly spelled out and with so many details.  We need to know the message; and we need to know the words so that we recognize those word when they are being quoted in the words of other books of the Bible.  This will enable us to distinguish between predictions that have more short time and then final time fulfillment.

  1. This is a judgment on the earth and its inhabitants.

“See, the LORD is going to lay waste the earth and devastate it; and scatter its inhabitants–”  (Isaiah 24:1 NIV)

  1. It will be a democratic judgment on all peoples.

“it will be the same for priest as for people, for master as for servant, for mistress as for maid, for seller as for buyer, for borrower as for lender, for debtor as for creditor.”  (Isaiah 24:2 NIV)

  1. The earth completely laid waste and totally plundered.

(1).  You must see that this word is spoke by the LORD Himself.

(2).  The earth dries up like a drought and withers, and at the same time the exalted people of the earth languages (it takes time).

“The earth dries up and withers, the world languishes and withers, the exalted of the earth languish.”  (Isaiah 24:4 NIV)

  1. A curse has come on the earth because of the guilt of the people. (Isaiah 24:5-10)

(1).  The Earth has been defiled by the people:  they have disobeyed laws, violated statutes, and broken “the everlasting covenant.”

(2).  Earth’s inhabitants are burned up with very few left; wine and merriment are gone; gone also is the sound of music instruments and revelers, and of the joyful harp.

(3).  Gone is wine and song, the taste of the beer, cities lie desolate, houses boarded up, cries come for wine, joy turns to gloom, and there is no gaiety on the earth.

The city is left in ruins, its gate is battered to pierced.  So will it be on the earth and among the nations, as when an olive tree is beaten, or as when gleanings are left after the grape harvest.  They raises their voices, they shout for joy; from the west they acclaim the LORD’s majesty.  Therefore in the east give glory to the LORD; exalt the name of the LORD, the God of Israel, in the islands of the sea.  From the ends of the earth we hear singing:  ‘Glory to the Righteous One.’  But I said, ‘I waste away, I waste away!  Woe to me!  The treacherous betray!  With treachery the treacherous betray!’  Terror and pit and snare await you, O people of the earth.  Whoever flees at the sound of terror will fall into a pit; whoever climbs out of the pit will be caught in a snare.”  (Isaiah 24:12-18 NIV)

  1. The Heavens are Shaken and the Earth is Shaken “in that day” (like the “one day of the LORD” of many other predictions), and the spiritual wickedness in high places will be punished as well as the people on the earth; and the sun and the moon will be affected; and the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem with the elders, gloriously (Isaiah 24:18-23)

Jeremiah on Other Nations.

A look back at our outline of chapter 5 of the book of Jeremiah, we will see that Jeremiah 46 is a prophecy about Egypt, Jeremiah 47 about the Philistines, chapter 48 about Moab, chapter 49 about Ammon, Edom, and others; and then in chapters 50 and 51 the fall of Babylon is predicted.

Daniel on the Nations

First, we should note a very significant change in Daniel 5:30 as Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians is killed, and Darius, the Mede took over the kingdom at the age of 62.

“That very night Belshazzar, king of the Babylonians was slain, and Darius the Mede took over the kingdom, at the age of sixty-two.”  (Daniel 5:30 NIV)

P-4:  Another Look at The Gospel Explained.

Where then do the Apostles come in?  They complete the Gospel story that God the Holy Spirit started in the Prophets, and of course the Lord Jesus Christ fulfills as the Prophet Messiah predicted by the Prophet Moses, the Gospel and all things.

Hebrews and Romans are as surely as much the Gospel, the Gospel according to Paul as are Matthew, John, Luke, and Mark.  Hebrews being Paul’s original Gospel address to the Jewish synagogues is the Gospel especially to the Jews, and Romans is the expanded Gospel version of Hebrews to the Gentiles.  You have previously noted that while Psalms quotes dominate the book of Hebrews, the quotes from Isaiah dominate that of Romans.  {It should be added that before Paul from imprisonment in Roman published Hebrews, he made certain additions for the Christians to whom it was sent.}

Idolatry Causes Calamities


Yes, you are not hearing it from news, pulpits and relief agencies where their only moralizing on Houston and Florida is how they come together, that is good because all Americans caused it, but God as always in calamities and adversity has “idolatry” that He hates, in mind; and the real grace is that no more lives were lost in so much total destruction. While these people including the worldly weather men are silent on the cause of calamities, the Bible has much to say on the subject.

25-6: Calamities That Cause Both Ears to Tingle!

This is a timely subject for us, as the ears of American are tingling today from the shock and surprises of current calamities like floods, fires, and tornadoes; and add to this the unparalleled historical series of calamities on this nation since 911, so that THIS IS A TIME FOR THE TINGLING OF EARS. And as the ears tingle, the American mind, knowing all of these legally are called “acts of God”, is ravaged with the thoughts of how much did God have to do with these calamities. Much insight comes from the study of “calamities” in the Bible.
1. This subject is very timely to these Bible Studies in Jeremiah as we know of the great calamity of desolation that God Himself brought on Judah and Jerusalem because of their idolatry. Ezekiel, the Prophet in Assyria and
contemporary with Jeremiah, spoke of this same idolatry and the calamity brought of the house of God Himself in Ezekiel–
“Then those of you who escape will remember Me among the nations where they are carried captive, because I was crushed by their adulterous heart which has departed from Me, and by their eyes which play the harlot after their idols; they will loathe themselves for the evils which they committed in all their abominations. And they shall know that I am the LORD; I have not said in vain THAT I WOULD BRING THIS CALAMITY UPON THEM. {Where did the calamity come from, it came from God, He “brought this calamity upon them”, did you miss that!} (Ezekiel 6:9-10)

“Thus says the Lord GOD: ‘Pound your fists and stamp your feet {is this what some Americans are doing in Alabama and along the flooded Mississippi River?}, and say, ‘Alas, for all the evil abominations of Israel! For they shall fall by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence.” {God is in charge and is the determinative factor although He can use warfare, hungry, and pestilence even as He can use floods, fires, and hurricanes to chastise His own people in calamities of the first kind.} (Ezekiel 6:11)
“He who is far off shall die by the pestilence, he who is near shall fall by the sword, and he who remains and is besieged shall die by the famine. Thus will I spend My fury upon them.” (Ezekiel 6:12)
NOTE: The Pope reflects the majority opinion of the world, and Americans, that anything bad can not come from God. Well, reconcile that with the Bible statement in God’s own words, “Thus will I spend My fury upon them.”


THEN IDOLATRY IS CURED! What is the cure of idolatry, a major calamity from God Himself!
“Then you shall know that I am the LORD, when their slain are among their idols all around {have you noticed in the increased series of calamities since 911 how many more churches are hit, and how the intensity of causalities has increased because God’s people of America are not listening!} their altars, on every high hill, on all the mountaintops, under every green tree, and under every thick oak, wherever they offered sweet incense to all their idols.”
(Ezekiel 6:13)
2. You quickly and easily recognize “calamities” as sent from God against idolatry in God’s chasing chastisement of the remnant which escaped to Egypt after the destruction and desolation of Judah and Jerusalem. {Recall that they asked for the word of God through Jeremiah whether to go from Mispah to Egypt, God told them they would be safe if they remained in the land; and then after Jeremiah delivered another message of condemnation about idolatry to them down in Pathros of Egypt, they blatantly refused to stop worshiping idols like the Queen of Heaven.}
(1). Jeremiah 44:2.
“Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: ‘You have seen all the CALAMITY that I have brought on Jerusalem and on all the cities of Judah; and behold, this day they are a desolation, and no one dwells in them, because of their wickedness which they have committed to provoke Me to
anger, that they went to burn incense and to serve OTHER gODS whom they did not know, they nor you nor your fathers.” (Jeremiah 44:2,3)
What part do you not understand of “I have brought on Jerusalem and all the cities of Judah”?
(2). Jeremiah 44:11 where “catastrophe” is a stronger and bigger calamity.
“They have not been humbled, to this day, nor have they feared: they have not walked in My law or in My statutes that I set before you and your fathers. Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts {again He is God of all the world, God of the Gentiles and Jews and all nations}, the God of Israel {the world really came to know Him foremost as the God of Israel during the reigns of David and Solomon}: ‘Behold, I will set My face against you for CATASTROPHE and for cutting off all Judah.” (Jeremiah 44:10,11)
(3). Jeremiah 44:23,
“So the LORD could no longer bear it, because of the evil of your doings and because of the abominations which you committed. Therefore your land is a desolation, an astonishment, a curse, and without an inhabitant, as it is this day. {what if we had a Jeremiah with the courage today to tell America that since these floods have come from the great God of the Universe, your land is in many places flooded and burned and a desolation; you are astonished that things can change so quickly when God’s blessings turn into a curse because of repeated and continuous idolatry, that God really does send curses just like He has previously sent blessings; and some of these lands, farm lands and downtown cities like in Memphis and New Orleans will also at least temporarily
be “without an inhabitant”}, as it is this day. Because you have burned incense and because you have sinned against the LORD, and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD or walked in His law, in His statutes or in His testimonies, therefore this CALAMITY has happened to you, as at this day.” (Jeremiah 44:22,23)
(4). Jeremiah 44:29. “Adversity” another word for Calamity.
“’And this shall be a sign to you,’ says the LORD, ‘that I will punish you in this place {the “place” was Egypt, chastisement was chased by calamity as the remnant of Jews tried to escape to Egypt and continue their idol worship of the Queen of Heaven}, that you may know that My words will surely stand against you for ADVERSITY.’” (Jeremiah 44:29)
God and Jeremiah wanted no misunderstanding of the reason for this adversity, as would Americans learn with the unparalleled series of intense calamities since 911 that God is both trying to speak and speak against His number one anger, IDOLATRY.
